{"id":374,"date":"2020-01-28T10:41:11","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T15:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.athensoms.com\/?page_id=374"},"modified":"2020-03-11T09:57:13","modified_gmt":"2020-03-11T13:57:13","slug":"apicoectomy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.athensoms.com\/index.php\/apicoectomy\/","title":{"rendered":"Apicoectomy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SURGICAL ROOT CANAL <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(APICOECTOMY\/RETROGRADE FILLING)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patients scheduled to have surgical root canal treatment (apicoectomy\/retrograde filling) should be familiar with certain information.&nbsp; If there are further questions please do not hesitate to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WHAT IS SURGICAL ROOT CANAL TREATMENT (APICOECTOMY\/RETROGRADE FILLING)?\u00a0<\/span> An apicoectomy is the excision of the apical portion of a tooth root through an opening made in the overlying bone.\u00a0 A retrograde filling is preformed when an apical preparation is followed by a retrograde filling with MTA (Mineral trioxide aggregate) root canal sealer. <\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WHEN IS SURGICAL ROOT CANAL TREATMENT (APICOECTOMY\/FILLING INDICATED?<\/span>\u00a0 When conventional root canal treatment fails to keep a tooth healthy and symptom free, then surgical root canal treatment may be indicated to save the tooth.\u00a0 These are basically three reasons for failure of conventional root canal treatment.\u00a0 These include the following:\u00a0 1.\u00a0 Accessory root canal system (miniature canals that contain necrotic (dead) material that cannot be reached with conventional root canal treatment.\u00a0 2.\u00a0 A poor apical seal &#8220;leaking&#8221;.\u00a0 3.\u00a0 A vertical fracture in the root.\u00a0 The apicoectomy removes the accessory root canal systems that contain necrotic (dead) material.\u00a0 If there is a poor apical seal, this can be treated with the retrograde MTA.\u00a0 If there is a vertical fracture in the root, then the tooth becomes non-restorable and must be extracted.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HOW IS THIS SURGERY PERFORMED?<\/span>\u00a0 An incision is made through the gum tissue close to the apical portion of the involved tooth.\u00a0 After the bone is exposed, a rotary drill instrument will be used to remove bone and expose the end of the root.\u00a0 The end of the root will be amputated and all adjacent infected tissue will be cleaned out.\u00a0 A retrograde MTA filling will now be placed if it is indicated (if there is a poor seal at the root end).<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SURGICAL ROOT CANAL (APICOECTOMY\/RETROGRADE FILLING) Patients scheduled to have surgical root canal treatment (apicoectomy\/retrograde filling) should be familiar with certain information.&nbsp; If there are further questions please do not hesitate to ask.
